Texter's Thumb

Texter’s Thumb, medically known as de Quervain’s Tendonitis or Thenar Tendonitis, is a painful condition generally caused by repetitive strain to the muscles of the thumb; Opponens Pollicis, Pollicis Brevis, Adductor Pollicis, Flexor Pollicis Brevis, and Abductor Pollicis Brevis.  If the strain in these muscles is left untreated, torn tissue and inflammation can result and affect the free movement of the tendon, causing pain upon thumb or wrist movements (pinching, grasping, or when a fist is made), swelling and tenderness at the base of the thumb, feeling/hearing “squeaking” as the tendon moves roughly through its sheath, and/or numbness in the back of the thumb/index finger.  The increasing popularity of text messaging and video games is making Texter’s Thumb more prevalent in today’s technologically advanced world.

NeuroMuscular Therapy can relieve the symptoms of Texter’s Thumb by releasing the associated Trigger Points, relaxing the strained Muscles, reducing Inflammation and speeding the healing of torn tissue.  It may also be necessary to decrease the action causing the strain until the muscles are fully healed.
